Crafts Fill My Days

August 9, 2006 at 08:15 pm (Crafts Fill My Days)

“Crafts fill my days - not to mention the living room, bedroom and closets.”

I was looking around the internet earlier and came across this saying and I thought how true this is as I looked around my craft/computer room filled with craft books, magazines, craft supplies and beads, beads and more beads!

Then I got to thinking about the closets that have things stuffed into them, those WIP’s or works in progress crafts that I had thought at the time “I love that pattern or idea I have to do it” then I started it and not sure what happened but didn’t complete it. Then the bits of paper with ideas on them from long ago and thinking wow what made me think of that one or some of them made me think or yes that would work why didn’t I do that.

Then I thought about under my bed, lol!! yes there is crafts under there to in plastic storage bins that are designed to fit under beds! I thought at the time how clever to use that space under there, and then I was motivated to fill them up to, lol!!

I have by accident spilled a bags of beads onto the floor or a bag or 2 has split open in the closet where I have some stored - thinking I have gotten them all up off the floor or out of the closet I find one or 2 beads here and there and wondered how I missed them the first time out and then thinking that they will be here in this house long after I move from it! I wonder if the new owners of the house will be inspired to do some kind of craft by what they find popping out of my closets!

So really the saying is so true for us! “Crafts really do fill our days and our closets and our bedrooms”

Have a great day everyone!

Happy Civic Holiday Canada

August 7, 2006 at 08:10 pm (Happy Civic Holiday Canada)

Today is the Civic Holiday in Canada but the name for the holiday varies from Province to Province and not every Province celebrates this holiday. Its also known as Simcoe Day in Toronto, Ontario, after Lord John Graves Simcoe and the holidays’s sole purpose is to provide a long weekend in August, a day of recreation and fun!

John Graves Simcoe, was the person who initiated the idea of this holiday, was more than just a colonial governor, he abolished slavery, created one of the longest streets today in the world, Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and a lot more.

The idea of a day of recreation came before Toronto City Council in 1869 and in 1875 it was settled, the first Monday in August would be the official Civic Holiday, nothing much has changed from then to now for the slowness of things be settled in government! As time went on it became the first Monday in August that included a weekend would be the holiday, so today August 7 was declared the holiday.

After this was settled in 1875 other cities, towns and Province’s came on board with the idea to have a long holiday weekend in August but the name of the holiday depending on where you are differs. In Ottawa, Ontario its called Colonel By Day, in the Province of Nova Scotia its called Natal Day, in Alberta Heritage Day and so on.

So where ever you are or whatever you call this Holiday, we hope that you have a fun and very safe Holiday today and don’t forget to drop by and visit with us on this Holiday as we have tons of fun for your beading needs!

Sorting Your Beads

July 28, 2006 at 07:54 pm (Sorting Your Beads)

When I first started beading I went out to my local craft store and found that my craft store carried a line of pony beads and mini pony beads by this particular company that manufactured these beads. I purchased over the time several bags of different colors as I wanted to build up my bead supply and as I was just getting into doing beaded banners I needed a lot of different colors for these.

At the time I sorted them by colors and put them into zip lock bags which are a great secure way to store your beads. Then my craft store added to their stock another company that manufactures beads and I was happy as could be so I went and bought some of these beads as well. I went home opened up and bags and put these new bags of beads into the bags with my other beads, never thinking anything different.

When I went to get out my beads to do a beading project I thought oh oh, the beads from one company were not exactly the same as they were from the other company. I noticed that the whites were not quite the same whites, the reds were just a bit different, the sizes of the beads and the shape of them were a bit different and the end result is that these differences would be showing up in my completed bead project. Not the end result that I wanted to see especially since it takes time to do any project.

I ended up taking each bag of beads and sorting them into separate bags and marking which company that they came from. I even put on the bag the color number, and any other information I thought would be good to have if I ever needed to get more. Lesson learned, make sure that you keep all your beads separated by company for sure as this will guarantee that your bead project will be uniform in color and size.

Having said that, I have also noticed that even from the same company the size and shape can be just slightly different, so when I sit down to do a project I have my beads ready but do watch which ones I choose to string on in the same row, it does make a difference!

Beading Ways

July 20, 2006 at 07:17 pm (Beading Ways)

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to what they use to bead their projects on or on what they sort their beads on.

We use something called a lap desk or bean bag table to do our projects on. Its like a little desk that has a solid top and a bean bag bottom and sits on your lap really well. Perfect for beading while your watching tv, or sitting outside on a nice summer day or anywhere, they are that portable. They come in all sizes, shapes and colors.

The particular one we use has a zippered pocket on the side so that we can store our scissors, packages of needles, pliers and anything that we might need to bead, it is approximately 19″ wide x 15″ high and also has a clip to the side of the board perfect for holding our patterns in place or anything that you want to secure to the board. Along the top is an indentation, an excellent place for resting your pens or pencils, needles or anything that you might need to have while your doing a particular project.

The one we use and describe above is perfect for all our beading projects and needs but you might decide that you need something larger or smaller, more of a wrap around style or just the board with no clips and pockets. Doing a google search for your area will allow you to find one locally or if you shop on line other stores that offer these as well, a perfect way to see what they look like what is available and to help you decide what you need for your beading style. These are also available through your local craft store, computer store and at some hardware stores as well.
